44th Macao Young Musicians Competition concluded successfully
MACAU, August 28 - The Special Prizes Competition and award ceremony of the 44th Macao Young Musicians Competition, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from its Portuguese acronym), was held on 6 August at the Seac Pai Van Public School. 20 Special Prizes in “Chinese Instrumental” and “Western Instrumental/Vocal” categories were presented by the Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Mok Chi Hang; the Acting Head of the Department of Performing Arts Development of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chan Shuk Mei; the Acting Head of the Division of Performing Arts of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Leong Ian Sin; and the judegs of the Special Prizes Competition, namely Xu Zhijun, Wang Fujian, Liu Shun, Li Fubin, Chen Bing, Jing Huan, Zhang Liang, Liu Ming and Liu Yu.
This year’s Competition attracted nearly 1,100 participants. A total of 78 competitions were held in 69 categories, and a total of 8 competitions were held in 8 categories of the Special Prizes competition.
Hong Xinquan, aged 18, won the “Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize (Chinese Instrumental Solo)”, namely the Grand Champion in the Advanced Level of the Chinese Instrumental Solo category. He learned percussion since the age of 9 and studied under the mentor Li Chang from the age of 14. He is about to further his studies in Chinese percussion at the Central Conservatory of Music. He was a member of his secondary school’s folk music ensemble and participated in various inter-school exchange activities, including the Macao Student and Youth Show. In 2024, he was selected for the 8th National Achievement Exhibition of the Traditional Musical Instruments Education for Youth & Children of China (Wenhua Award) and also participated in the performance “Melody of Youth” and other activities held during the Government Headquarters Open Day.
Ho Nok Hin, aged 14, won the “Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize (Western Instrumental / Vocal Solo)”, namely the Grand Champion in the Advanced Level of the Western Instrumental / Vocal Solo category. He was first taught by Yuliy Astakhov and subsequently honed his skills under Ng Chi Fan and Zhou You. He currently studies under the mentor Lü Jia, Principal Cellist of the Macao Orchestra, with a deep focus on musical interpretation; he also studies chamber music with Cheong Cheng Peng. He served as a cellist in the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra, gaining extensive orchestral ensemble experience through rehearsals and performances.
In the Chinese Instrumental Solo Categories of the Special Prizes Competition, the Grand Champion, Grand First Runner-up and Grand Second Runner-up in the Elementary Level were Chan Tsz Long, Lam Wai U and Pak Chi Hin. The Grand First Runner-up and Grand Second Runner-up in the Intermediate Level were Ao Chi Io and Ho Cheok Hei, with the Grand Champion not awarded. The Grand First Runner-up and Grand Second Runner-up in the Advanced Level were Kou Ka Iao and Chen Ka Kei. The Best Performance Prize in Chinese Instrumental Ensemble Category went to Wong Meng Him, Chang Ieng Fu, Guo Cheng I, Ao Chi Io, Ieong Kun Wang, Wong Chi In, Chan Cheok Ieng, Ng Soi Tong and Loi Cheng Lok.
In Western Instrumental / Vocal Solo Categories of the Special Prizes Competition, the Grand Champion, Grand First Runner-up and Grand Second Runner-up in the Elementary Level were U Iek Lam, Zhao Iek Meng and Leong Weng Hei. The Grand First Runner-up and Grand Second Runner-up in the Intermediate Level were Sio Wai Lam and Wong Hoi In, with the Grand Champion not awarded. The Grand First Runner-up and Grand Second Runner-up in the Advanced Level were Ho Nok Hin and Yu Chao Ton. The Best Performance Prize in Western Instrumental / Vocal Ensemble Category went to Wong Hou Long and Yu Chao Ton.
